The Cushings Disease

The Cushings disease is known as hyperadrenocorticism. It is caused because of the high-production of hormones from the adrenal glands.

There are two adrenal glands, one being small bean-shaped structure which is situated on top of each of your pet’s two kidneys. Inner adrenal medullas surrounded by an outer adrenal cortex are the two regions of the glands.

There are many variety of hormones which are been released by the adrenal glands. The medulla which is in charge of producing epinephrine and (adrenaline). These hormones manage the body’s response to stress and affect blood pressure and heart rate.

The adrenal cortex produces hormones such as cortisone and aldosterone which are necessary for balancing fluid and electrolytes (salt) in the body as well as regulating the use of dietary protein, fats and carbohydrates and controlling inflammation.

The symptoms of cushing’s disease are:

1. Increased thirst/drinking and urination
2. Increased appetite
3. Panting
4. High blood pressure
5. Loss of hair
6. Calcified lumps in the skin
7. Thinning skin and susceptibility to infections

If not diagnosed at the right time the Cushings may increase your pet’s risk of other conditions including diabetes, weakening of the heart and nervous system disease.
